In Episode #9 of This Ocean Life podcast we speak with Lincoln Dews, a lifelong man of the water who grew up on the Gold Coast of Australia loving the ocean and pushing his limits from an early age. Lincoln shares stories growing up in an ocean-focused family, winning a youth state ironman championship, stepping on a SUP for the first time, and completing his first solo Molokai channel crossing at age 15 (!!). Lincoln's perspective on a life of pursuing new challenges in the ocean from sailing, SUP, prone paddling, foiling, surf lifesaving, and more is really fun and inspirational. Today, as a top professional on the world SUP tour, Lincoln talks about his focus on pursuing a championship, training the next generation of ocean athletes, and continuing to develop his own education.

We hear about David's experience in Cape Verde, a remote location off the African coast where David and team filmed Aqua Negra and pursued their search for new water, new experiences, and new friendships. Aqua Negra is a beautiful and amazing film -- you do not have to love spearfishing to love this movie.

In this episode we talk with the prolific surfer and prone paddle boarder, Steve Shlens. Steve went from a broken back to winning the 32-mile Catalina Classic 1-year later. Steve has a crazily colorful and successful paddling career including national championship wins as a Jr LIfeguard in the 1980s, wins at Molokai 2 Oahu and Catalina Classic events, and onto a 2015 international win with the United States ISA Team which he now COACHES. After 4 years away from surfing, Steve’s first wave back was at Teahupoo, before Teahupoo was a household name. Steve takes us through his amazing ocean life and shares some great thoughts on the mental aspect of endurance sports and leveraging challenges in day to day life to push us beyond our limits in the ocean.

In this episode we talk with Mike Dilloughery, a native of Santa Cruz, CA who did the unthinkable — he paddled over 25 miles across the Monterey Bay, touched land and filled his water bottles, then paddled back. In total Mike paddled 55 miles, completely solo and with no support boat. We hear this and other paddling stories from Ghostryders Watermens Club (GRWC) along with Mike’s perspective on growing up at Steamer Lane during the 1980’s as Santa Cruz surfing progressed rapidly from twin fins and day glow wetsuits into big waves and airs.
